LIST TO DRAWING AND BACK

One PDF.
Every tag one click away.

Combine a component list and a searchable P&ID into one document. Each tag in the list links to the drawing, and each tag on the drawing links back to its row in the list.

What can I open?

A component list in XLSX, XLSM, XLS, CSV or TSV format, and a P&ID as a PDF with searchable text. One worksheet is used at a time. The tool reads saved, displayed cell values; it does not calculate formulas or run macros.

Password-protected and digitally signed PDFs are refused, because adding pages and links would invalidate them. Scanned drawings without a text layer cannot be searched.

What do the list pages look like?

Like the original sheet prints the worksheet from its first used row, title block included, with the workbook’s column widths, row heights, fills, borders, bold and underlined text, alignment, rotated headers and merged cells, scaled to the page width. The header row repeats on every page. It needs an XLSX or XLSM workbook. The list is drawn in Noto Sans, so text may be slightly narrower than in Excel; bold is simulated.

Clean table shows the header and data rows in a uniform table with its own title. It works with every supported file type.

How are tags found on the drawing?

Every text item on each drawing page is compared with the tags in the list. Matches are whole words, so PV 201 never matches PV 2010. Letter case is ignored, and dots, hyphens, slashes and spaces count as the same separator: 100.PV.201, 100-PV-201, 100/PV/201 and 100 PV 201 are one tag. Words on one line are joined across a space or slash only when together they form a tag from your list.

Two-line tags in instrument bubbles are found too: PI over 232-1017 matches PI-232-1017, 232-PI-1017 (function letters on top) and PI232-1017 (no separator). The lines must be centred or aligned, the same size and close together, and a piece that could belong to two tags is left alone.

A tag cell with spaces, such as PV 201, counts as a tag when the column writes most of its tags that way. Descriptive text such as “Intake tank 1 - 9601” is never read as a tag. When the tag is spread over several columns, such as Area, Function and Loop, select + next to the tag column in step 02 (or Build the tag from several columns) and add up to four more columns; × removes one. A row needs at least two filled parts to count as a composed tag.

The linker counts the parts of each tag. If the drawing omits a part, such as the area code, choose Match on selected tag parts. Different tags that then look the same are reported as ambiguous and are not linked.

What goes on the drawing?

Step 04 adds annotations only; the drawing content itself is unchanged. The popup note on each highlighted tag is automatic (the tag, up to six list values and the list row) or built from the columns you choose, one “Header: value” line each. Any worksheet column can be used, also ones that are not in the list.

A label beside the tag shows chosen column values in your order, with optional fixed text before or after them, in 4–24 pt. Labels print unless you clear Print labels; they are read-only and locked. Characters that the bundled Noto Sans font lacks, such as Chinese or Japanese, print as “?” in labels; notes keep the full text.

Colour rules test a tag part (1–8) or any column: equals, contains, greater than, less than (numbers such as 1 234,5 or 12 bar are read in any common format) or has a value. The last matching rule wins and sets the highlight colour; a rule can also carry label text such as HOLD, which replaces the fixed label text. Rings and list-row bars take the rule colour only with Also colour rings and list row markers. Tags in the list always keep blue, red and amber. For duplicate tags the first row supplies the note, colour and label; ambiguous tags get no drawing annotations.

What are the limits?

30 MB per list with up to 100,000 rows and 256 columns, and 150 MB per PDF. Large drawing sets take longer; available browser memory also affects capacity. The on-screen report shows up to 5,000 entries; the CSV contains all of them. Up to 100 colour rules; fixed label text up to 120 characters, rule label text up to 40.

Does anything leave my computer?

This tool reads the selected files into browser memory. It has no file upload endpoint, external document processing or telemetry. The website still serves the application files normally. The linked PDF contains your list and drawing, so share it intentionally.

Are my files or settings saved?

Files and list rows are not saved to WordPress or browser storage. Only Save as stores a named configuration with the header row, tag column, columns, layout and drawing annotation settings (including rule values and label text) on this device for this site. Clear session clears the loaded files and results.

How do the links behave?

A linked tag in the list (blue in the clean table, underlined in blue in the printed sheet) opens the first drawing page where the tag appears, zoomed to the tag. The P&ID page column links to every page where the tag appears. Clicking a tag on the drawing returns to its row in the list; use your reader’s Back command (Alt+Left arrow in Acrobat) to return to the drawing. Tags shown or underlined in red were not found; amber tags are ambiguous.

Duplicate tags in the list all link to the drawing; the drawing links back to the first of them. Existing drawing annotations and bookmarks are kept.

How do I spot the tag after a jump?

With Ring linked tags on, every linked tag on the drawing has a thick coloured ring and every row the drawing links back to has a bar in the left margin. The rings are screen-only annotations: the drawing itself is unchanged and they do not print. Labels from step 04 print unless Print labels is off. A close-up is sized to the tag and shaped like a wide window, so the tag fills more of the screen than before.

Can I send the interactive viewer to someone?

Yes. Download interactive HTML saves one .html file with the viewer, the markers and the PDF inside. The recipient double-clicks it and it opens in Chrome, Edge or Firefox without this website, the plugin or a network connection. The size is shown next to the button; it is roughly the PDF’s size plus a third, plus about 1 MB for the viewer. Many mail systems refuse attachments over 20–25 MB, and many block .html attachments altogether, so zip the file or share it through OneDrive, SharePoint or a similar service.

A recipient who has only the linked PDF can open it with Open a linked PDF in the viewer on this page: the jumps, markers and Back work without the Excel list. Any other PDF opens as a plain viewer.

Continuous scrolls through consecutive PDF pages and can be switched off for single-page viewing. Each split-view pane scrolls independently. Enable Add a drawing list in step 03 for two blocks of drawing numbers and names before the components; review the editable entries before building.

View in browser opens the built PDF on this page. Click a tag and the viewer zooms to the target and puts a pulsing frame exactly on it; click it again to repeat. Back (or Backspace) returns to where you were. Page Up and Page Down change page, + and − zoom, W fits the width and P the whole page. Split view (or S) puts the list on the left and the drawing on the right: click a tag on one side and the other side finds it. Drag the divider to resize. Stacked (or H) puts the list above the drawing instead. Pop out drawing (or O) opens the drawing in its own window, for example on a second screen; tags still link between the two windows, and Dock or closing that window puts it back. The browser may ask you to allow pop-ups for this page first. The viewer reads the PDF in this browser; nothing is uploaded.

A missing link is a review item, not automatically an error. Check the tags that were not found and the drawing-only tags before relying on the document.
